R’ Goldstein,* needed parnassah, so he was tutoring two bachurim, one during first seder, and one during second seder. He didn’t really have enjoyment from the tutoring, and it wasn’t going smoothly, but he kept doing it because he needed the money. Then he said to himself, “It’s not proper hishtadlus. I learn with more geshmak in Bais Medrash Gevoah, that’s where I get Simchas Hachayim. I need money? Hashem will work it out. He gave up his tutoring jobs and went back to learning at Bais Medrash Gevoah. Soon afterwards, someone arranged for him to learn with a bachur whose father wanted for him a great chavrusa and was willing to pay top dollar. Last week, a man called up Rabbi Golombeck with a question. He wanted to spend money for for Shalom Bayis purposes, but it was hard for them to spend the money. Rabbi Golombeck told him that the Chafetz Chaim says that you will end up getting back double when you spend money for mitzvah purposes; and that he should report to him when he gets the money back. A week later, he called Rabbi Golombeck back to tell him that not only did he get back double, but that he got his money quadrupled! He just made a business deal, and he never made such a big deal in his life! He got back four times the amount that he spent! Such clear Hashgacha Pratis! Mrs. Gold* said that her daughter wanted to go to camp with all her friends. The camp said that all her friends were accepted, but she was not. She felt very rejected. Then she said, “One second. Rabbi Yehuda Mandel is a Rebbe in YTT. They gave him a key to the front door, and they told him, “Make sure not to lose it!” He lost the key, and he couldn’t find it. He said, “You think I need that key? I’ll take a different key.” He took a different key, and it worked! Rabbi Mandel said that other people tried using other keys, but their keys didn’t work. Rabbi Yehuda Mandel got a nosebleed, and it dripped on his white Shabbos tablecloth. He attempted to wipe off the stain with a damp towel, but it wouldn’t budge, which he knew would certainly disappoint his wife. So he said, “You think It’s a towel that cleans anything? Or the water that cleans it? It’s Hashem!” He tried again, and it just went out! It disappeared! He showed it to Rabbi Golombeck, and he said: “Look, where’s the nosebleed? I can’t see it! Mrs. Weinberg was late for her child’s eye doctor’s appointment and called to see if she could still be seen. The receptionist said that if she could come within seven minutes, then yes; otherwise, there would be nothing to do. Mrs. Weinberg thought to herself, “The doctor said seven minutes, and he’s very firm about it.” Then she thought to herself, “There’s no way I’m going to get there in seven minutes. If I rush, it’s going to rob me of my menuchas hanefesh and simchas hachaim. That’s not proper hishtadlus.” So she decided that she would go calmly, and she said to herself, “While I’m having Bitachon, not only are they going to take me, they’re going to be nice to me! They’re going to be friendly, easy-going, and geshmak!” When she came to the office, even though she was late, the secretary said, “Wow, it’s so amazing you came. Mrs. Fried* from Eretz Yisrael was looking high and low for a new apartment. People told her that what she was looking for was a dream and that she was never going to get it. “Just take whatever you can get.” Somebody called her up and said that they knew of an available apartment; she should come to check it out. It had nothing that she wanted, but she said to herself, “Hishtadlus isn’t cause and effect. We do our part, and Hashem will do His part.” They went to check it out, and on the way, they saw a sign for a different apartment. They checked out all the details, they went, and it was exactly what they were looking for! It was a dream apartment. They took it, and they saw that Hashem has many ways.
